Whitwell

The earliest mention of Whitwell is in the will of Wulfric Spott, who, in the time of King Ethelred, bestowed land in Derbyshire, including Whitwell and several adjacent parishes, to Morcar.  The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in the year 942 AD, there was a place called Hwitan Wylles Great in this locality.  From these words meaning 'the shining stream' the name of Whitwell was derived.  'Geat' is an old Saxon word meaning 'A passage between hills'.  In this passage or valley, the village settlement began.

Bondhay Golf Club (www.bondhaygolfclub.com)

Designed by one of the worlds most respected golf course architects, Donald Steel, in 1990, Bondhay Gold Club, set in the heart of the Dukeries, is a superb test of golf.  The course has matured quickly and is now one of the best championship parkland tests in the area.  Playing off tips (back tees) you'll find this course quite a challenge.  Bunkers are a predominant feature here and many of the greens are hard to hit as they contain tight, narrow entrances,  The last three holes provide a tough run in home to the club house which has views over the course and further beyond.
